Jeff Bezos, 61, of Miami, FL recently noticed that the Amazon warehouse in Cleveland, OH was running dangerously low on paper towels. Bezos manages several Amazon locations, but "this is the one that needs my attention today," he said as he selected four boxes that happened to be lying around at the facility in Fort Wayne, IN and added them to his Wish List. As he scheduled a box truck to pick up the paper towels, initially for $682.03, he paused and said, "I'd better add two cents to that. The US Mint isn't making pennies anymore, and I want the driver to be able to withdraw the whole amount."
As Bezos posted the load to Relay, his company's own grassroots load board, he added, "I could probably get these cheaper than the shipping cost at the local Costco, but I really like the Dixie brand, and I'm not sure if they have that there. Plus, it feels good to give the work to my own employees, contractors, and robots."
Jan Griffith, a contractor with Round Robin Transportation ended up booking the load. "I was planning to go straight home after I dropped off that other Amazon load in Fort Wayne," Jan said, "but I know how much Jeff needs these paper towels." He is expected to unload the much anticipated cargo by 6:30 a.m., but Bezos said he would give him until 8:00 before sending him a message through the Relay app telling him to identify the reason for the late truck within 15 minutes while he's driving.
Until then, the Cleveland workers will have to walk around with wet hands or use the blow dryer.
